Quins II Vs Toa Dubai Match Report - December 20th 2009

On Thursday the 10th of December Abu Dhabi Harlequins second 15 played Tao Dubai for the 1st time. Toa who are new to the competition came to Abu Dhabi with an undefeated record.

Kickoff was at 8:30 and in front of good crowd of supporters at Al Ghazel golf course. The opening exchanges were very physical with both teams attempting to dominate the breakdown area. Throughout the 1st half both side had good possession and opportunities to score tries.  The 1st points for both team was the due to poor discipline at the breakdown resulting in penalties. With 5 minutes to go in the 1st half, missed opportunities and poor discipline resulted in the Harlequins trailing Toa 9 points to 3. In the final 5 minutes of the half, the Harlequins were able to hold onto the ball for multiple phases within Toa’s 22m zone and score a converted try.

Half time Score: Abu Dhabi 10, Toa Dubai 9

Straight after half time Toa went on the offensive and scored a converted try taking the lead for the second time in the game. The during the next 15 minutes Abu Dhabi held onto the ball and after several attempts were able to score their second try mid way through the second half. Abu Dhabi failed to convert the try and trailed Toa by one point. From the following kickoff the Harlequins went on the attack and after another 5 minutes were awarded a penalty which was successfully taken edging Abu Dhabi 2 points ahead of Toa.

The final 20minutes of play was the most exciting and aggressive rugby played in the match. Both team had opportunities to score points, especially TOA Dubai who missed two penalty attempts in the last 10 minutes of the game. The breakdown areas were ferocious and many big tackles were made resulting in a number of turnovers for both sides. Abu Dhabi was able to hold onto their slender lead and win the game.
