Under 7s Season Review 2008-09

The U7’s age group has developed over the season to be a driving force in the local Junior Rugby scene. Training on Thursday evenings, the average number of attendees was well over 30 – peaking at around 46-47 on some evenings. Despite the large numbers the 4 coaches for this age group and the willing group of “mum and dad volunteers” ensured that whilst enjoying their rugby everyone learnt and developed their rugby skills, immaterial of individual abilities.

By the end of the season all of the group could confidently pass (backwards) and catch the rugby ball whilst running and were developing well the rules of the game and the concept of team play rather than individual “I want to score the tries” mentality associated with this age group.

The pride of wearing the Abu Dhabi Harlequins jumper was only too evident at tournament games – where success was provided in the team winning the Abu Dhabi tournament Plate Final last October 2008 having only played competitive rugby a few weeks before. Also the age group attended the Dubai festival and again performed to the best of their ability, but unfortunately a trophy less day due to seasonal holidays where we had to mix and match the team. Despite this the passion, determination and “give your all” mentality was still very much in evidence.

Victories over the Abu Dhabi French, Dubai Exiles and The Abu Dhabi Harlequins U8 select team only enhanced how this age group has developed during the season. There is an excellent core group of naturally gifted players and from all the coaching staff of the U7’s we wish this group all the best in the U8’s and for as long as they keep playing the game.
