ADHRC V Trinity College (Croydon) UK - U12 Match Report

Final Score: ADHRC 10 Trinity College 31

ADHRC V Trinity College (Croydon) UK - U12 Match Report

The above game was played at home against Trinity College, a touring side en route to Dubai.  Trinity College’s reputation preceded them as we were informed they were a strong side, this however stirred on the AD players and to be honest, the final score of ADHRC 10 Trinity College 31, did not entirely reflect the competitiveness of the game.

Two 25 minute halves were played on a full sized pitch with 15 aside, this proved to be an interesting challenge for the college boys as they had to contend with jetlag, increased temperatures, and not forgetting, our Molly, a girl, the college being an all boys affair.

AD kicked the game off and immediately moved the ball away from their own forwards, as the coach; I can’t remember briefing on that one.  A quick regroup saw AD apply some interesting and promising early pressure.  The first few minutes were spent at the college end of the pitch, AD failing to push this advantage home and register points on the board, were caught by an excellent run from No 17 Gabriel (eventual Man of the Match) who ran from deep in his own half and registered the first points of the game.  AD stung by this, returned strongly and registered points through a try themselves from Jacob.  Two more scores followed for Trinity, before AD registered another try from our Pack Leader Thomas who took advantage of an infringement by Trinity after a penalty, Thomas went over powerfully from close range.

All over the pitch, in the loose, at the set piece, and in general open play, it was a very competitive affair.  Trinity ought to be applauded for their ability to produce good basic rugby, move through the phases, and strike when the opportunity was available.  There were also pleasing signs of progression, in both the AD forward & backs from the skills/drills that Jerry & I have been developing all season.  From the five tries conceded by AD, three were good, strong runs on the outside, by the Trinity backs and one interception, areas that we will be looking at before we enter the Semi Finals of the Gulf Region League.

It would also be remise of me not to mention the four U11s in the squad who all played a full half against opposition a year above.  You should be sure, that you were in no shape or form, making up the numbers, but heartily displayed the ability and confidence that your coaches conveyed to Jerry & I, well done.

The match concluded with a chilli supper for all players/parents/coaches, interrupted by a number of welcome presentations by both sides.  This, I particularly value, as it is continued education of rugby etiquette, in addition to the normal skills coaching.

This experience for ADHRC U12s would not have been possible if the AGRFU, ADHRC, Trinity College, all player’s parents, coaches and finally Paul Crooks who refereed had not engaged to the extent they had, and on behalf of the AD players, I would like to thank all concerned, and look forward to seeing Trinity College here next year, see you then Graham.

Steve Henderson, Jerry Mason
ADHRC U12 Coaches.
